I was confused on how to start my career in sustainability.

When I was in undergrad, I knew I cared about sustainability. I just didn’t know what that could actually look like as a career. What jobs existed? What skills did I need? Who was I supposed to talk to?

There were career fairs with vague titles, panels that felt a little too polished, and job boards that required 5 years of experience before you even knew what the role was. I knew I wanted to make a difference, but I didn’t know where to start—or how to find people who were asking the same questions.

Fast forward a few years, and I finally found myself in sustainability roles. Dream job, right? Kind of. What no one tells you is that even when you land the gig, the learning doesn’t stop. The teams are small. Sometimes you’re the only one doing sustainability work. And staying on top of trends, best practices, or even having someone to bounce ideas off of? That can feel like a luxury.

That’s why I created Shaping Sustainability. To create a space to talk openly about sustainability. A space to explore what sustainability means across industries, identities, and career paths. A space where students, professionals, educators, creatives, and change-makers can connect without the jargon or the gatekeeping.
